Background Due to the prevailing heavy rains and flash floods in the Mannar District, the village of Thethawadi in Illuppaikadavai has been severely affected. Residents have faced significant hardships, losing access to basic necessities and suffering damage to their properties. To assess the human rights situation and provide immediate relief, a team from the Sri Lanka Fundamental Rights Organization (LFRO), led by Northern Province Additional Director General Mr. Puvanesan Mohanarayan, visited the village today. 2. Immediate Relief Assistance Provided Understanding the urgent needs of the displaced and affected families, the LFRO team distributed the following essential items: Dry Ration Packs: Essential food supplies for families who have lost their livelihoods. Clothing: Urgent garments and clothing materials for children and adults. Mosquito Nets: High-quality nets provided to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases and protect those staying in temporary shelters. 3. Key Grievances and Requests from the Community During the distribution, the LFRO team engaged in a dialogue with the villagers. The community highlighted two critical long-term issues that require immediate state intervention: Agricultural Rehabilitation: The floods have completely destroyed paddy cultivations and other farmlands. The villagers requested the government and relevant departments to provide urgent assistance to rebuild their agricultural livelihoods. Elephant Protection Fence: A long-standing issue in the region is the intrusion of wild elephants.
